ASHLEY SUMNER FROM ELLESMERE SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR FATAL ATTACK ON GRANDFATHER IN SHROPSHIRE

In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Ellesmere, 31-year-old Ashley Sumner from Berwyn View has been handed a three-year prison sentence after being found guilty of the unlawful killing of his grandfather, John Bathers.

The incident occurred on September 6 at a property located in St Martins, a village within the Shropshire region.

Mr Bathers sustained serious injuries during the altercation, which ultimately led to his hospitalization.

Despite receiving medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries two days later, passing away in hospital.

Sumner had previously admitted to charges of manslaughter, as well as admitting to taking a vehicle without permission and operating it without insurance.

The court proceedings took place at Stafford Crown Court, where the judge sentenced him to three years in prison, reflecting the gravity of the offense.

Detective Inspector Dafydd Jones commented on the case, emphasizing the emotional toll on the victim’s family.

He stated, "This has been a deeply distressing situation for the family of the victim, knowing that the person responsible was a relative.

Despite this, Ashley Sumner accepted responsibility and received a custodial sentence.

I hope that the swift resolution of this case will bring some comfort to the family, and our thoughts remain with them." The family of John Bathers expressed their profound sorrow and grief over his loss.

They described him as a "kind, caring man who was deeply loved by his family," highlighting the tragic impact of his death on those who knew him.

The case has left the Ellesmere community in shock, raising questions about safety and family violence within the area.

The court's decision aims to serve justice for Mr Bathers and provide some measure of closure for his loved ones.
