ASHLEY HICKEY OF LETCHWORTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES IN WELWYN GARDEN CITY
In a case that has shocked the local community, Ashley Hickey, a 29-year-old man from Letchworth, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison after admitting to engaging in sexual activity with a minor.The court proceedings took place at St Albans Crown Court, where Hickey appeared for sentencing following his guilty plea.
The criminal acts occurred at a property located in Welwyn Garden City during the months of October and November 2018.
The victim, a young girl aged just 14 at the time, was subjected to grooming by Hickey, who reportedly treated her kindly and bought her gifts in an attempt to manipulate her into a relationship.
These disturbing details emerged during the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
The allegations came to light in December 2018 when the victim disclosed the abuse, prompting immediate action from law enforcement authorities.
Police were called to investigate the claims, and Hickey was swiftly arrested.
During questioning, he denied the accusations, maintaining his innocence despite the mounting evidence against him.
Following a thorough investigation conducted by the Sexual Offences Investigation Team (SOIT) of the local police, charges were formally brought against Hickey.
A trial was scheduled for May 2020; however, the proceedings were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted court schedules nationwide.
When the trial finally commenced on September 6, 2021, Hickey unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty, admitting to the charges against him.
In addition to his prison sentence, Hickey was subjected to a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), both of which will remain in effect for ten years.
