ARWYN THOMAS OF SWANSEA COLLAPSES IN COURT AFTER BEING SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR MONSTROUS CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a harrowing courtroom incident at Swansea Crown Court, Arwyn Thomas, a 49-year-old man from Morriston, experienced a physical collapse immediately after being sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 22 years, with an additional six-year extension, for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of children.Thomas had previously entered a plea of not guilty to 15 separate charges, which included the rape of a child under the age of 13.
However, following a detailed trial, the jury found him guilty on all counts.
The charges encompassed five counts of indecent assault, six counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of rape of a child under 13, and an additional charge of assault of a child under 13 by penetration.
As the judge, Paul Thomas QC, delivered the sentence, the courtroom was forced to be cleared due to Thomas’s sudden collapse.
Witnesses reported that he fainted and had to be assisted as he was led out of the court.
The incident underscored the profound impact of the verdict and sentence on the convicted man.
Judge Paul Thomas QC did not hold back in his remarks, describing Thomas as a “devious” and “controlling” individual who had inflicted lasting trauma on his victims.
The judge emphasized the cruelty and systematic nature of the abuse, stating, “The way in which you abused these children was simply monstrous, and I choose my words carefully.” He further explained that Thomas had exploited the victims’ young ages, with the pattern of abuse indicating a specific sexual interest in children of a particular age group.
The judge noted that Thomas’s abusive behavior escalated over time, becoming increasingly heinous.
“There was an escalation in what you did.
You behaved in a quite awful fashion,” he said, highlighting the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon the victims.
Thomas, who was formerly residing in Llanelli but linked to Morriston, was convicted on January 17 and will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
The court also heard a series of victim impact statements, one of which revealed the deep psychological scars left by Thomas’s actions.
A survivor shared, “I used to have flashbacks to what he had done to me.
I was ashamed about what he had done to me.” The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the crimes and the emotional toll on the victims, with the court condemning Thomas’s actions as utterly reprehensible and a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against child abuse.
