CHESTER MAN ARTUR ZAKOWICZ SHOCKS COMMUNITY WITH CRUELTY TO PET CAT BASHIK
In a disturbing case that has shocked residents of Chester, Artur Zakowicz, a man born around 1976 and residing on Brook Street, was caught on CCTV engaging in a brutal act of animal cruelty involving his pet cat, Bashik. The footage, which has since been made public, vividly captures Zakowicz grabbing the black and white feline by the skin and delivering six forceful slaps with his hand. The assault was so severe that he pushed Bashik to the ground, causing visible distress to the animal. The incident occurred on March 24, 2022, in Charles Street, Chester, very close to Zakowicz’s own residence. Witnesses or surveillance footage revealed the horrifying scene, prompting immediate concern from animal welfare authorities. Following the incident, authorities from the RSPCA and Cheshire Police launched an investigation, which led them to Zakowicz’s property on April 16 of the same year.
Later that day, Bashik was taken to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for a thorough examination. Fortunately, the veterinarian found no apparent injuries resulting from the attack. However, the vet explained that any soft tissue damage Bashik might have sustained could have healed by the time of the examination. Despite the lack of visible injuries, the vet confirmed that Bashik would have experienced pain for several hours, possibly longer, during the attack.
Zakowicz was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a cat, a violation under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The case drew significant attention, highlighting the importance of animal protection laws and the need for strict enforcement.
As part of the legal proceedings, Bashik was taken into the care of the RSPCA, which also rescued Zakowicz’s other cat, Kalpik. The charity has announced plans to rehome both animals, ensuring they find safe and loving environments away from potential harm.
In sentencing, Zakowicz received a 12-month community order, which includes 15 days of rehabilitation activities and 200 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £614 in costs and victim surcharge. Importantly, Zakowicz has been banned from keeping any animals for five years, a restriction that will remain in effect until October 2027. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of animal cruelty and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable creatures in Chester and beyond.
