ANWAR CHOWDHURY SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN INVERNESS: POLICE HIGHLIGHT VIGILANCE AND JUSTICE

Police Scotland has officially confirmed the conviction of Anwar Chowdhury, a man from Inverness, for the serious crime of rape that occurred in August 2018. The case was brought to justice after a thorough legal process, culminating in a trial held at the High Court in Aberdeen last November. Following the verdict, Chowdhury, aged 41 at the time of sentencing, was sentenced on Tuesday, 4 February 2020, to serve a six-year prison term. Additionally, he will be registered on the sex offenders register for the remainder of his life, reflecting the gravity of his offense and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.

Detective Inspector Diane Smith issued a statement emphasizing the severity of the crime and the importance of justice for victims. She stated, “Anwar Chowdhury abused a position of trust and responsibility to take advantage of a vulnerable woman for his own gratification when she was not in a position to give consent. His behavior has been deplorable. His conviction is a testament to her bravery throughout the police investigation and subsequent legal process.”

Inspector Smith further underscored the commitment of Police Scotland to combat sexual offenses, especially in the Highlands and Islands region, which includes Inverness. She reaffirmed that sexual offending, particularly acts committed without consent, is unacceptable and remains a top priority for law enforcement agencies across Scotland. The police continue to work closely with partner organizations such as Rape Crisis Scotland and Women’s Aid to support victims and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

She also urged the public to report any offences promptly, either directly to Police Scotland or through partner agencies.
