IRISH MAN GUILTY OF RAPE IN DUBLIN PLEADS GUILTY AND RECEIVES SUSPENDED SENTENCE
Anthony Prior (51), married with a family, pleaded guilty to raping the woman at his home on September 1, 2003, and was given a four-year suspended sentence.
Mr Justice Paul Carney, who certified Prior as a registered sex offender, said he took guidance in imposing sentence from a ruling made in another case in which a four-year sentence had been set aside and a suspended term put in its place by the Court of Criminal Appeal.
The events, which began as a convivial evening among friends with excessive alcohol consumption, led to a 'West End bedroom farce' involving sleeping arrangements, with Prior eventually having sex with the victim, initially believing she was his wife.
Prior fully cooperated with Gardaí, expressed remorse, and made a significant settlement with the victim.
The court noted the incident occurred in Charlotte House, Manor Street, Dublin.
Prior admitted to a fault, stating he did not obtain permission for sex and could not apologize enough.
