2004: LOVER IS JAILED FOR ASSAULT
A man who subjected his partner to a violent assault involving a belt has been sentenced to three years in prison at Worcester Crown Court.Angus Currie also struck Stella Field with a punch to her left ear, requiring stitches, and the incident escalated when she grabbed a knife in self-defense.
Currie snatched the knife from her, causing a cut to his hand, according to prosecutor Neil Williams.
Currie, aged 59 and residing on Mitton Gardens in Stourport, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and causing actual bodily harm to Miss Field.
Judge Michael Mott described him as "a dangerous drunk and a coward." The defendant has previous convictions related to assault, wounding, property damage, and threats.
His sentencing was postponed last week after he became intoxicated outside the court.
Following a lengthy relationship, Miss Field left Currie after a dispute on January 3 and moved in with her mother.
However, after he called her to apologize, she decided to return to him.
Mr.
Williams explained that Currie’s mood deteriorated after consuming vodka, leading him to lunge at Miss Field as she sat on a sofa, beating her with punches and kicks.
He then strangled her by grabbing her around the neck and took off his belt with a metal buckle, striking her back and causing bruising.
Defense lawyer Gareth Walters stated that Miss Field appeared in court with Currie and expressed a desire to rekindle their relationship.
He noted that the longer they were separated, the more emotional she became.
Currie admitted that his behavior was unacceptable and acknowledged that he needs professional assistance to address his alcohol dependency.
