ANDREW MURRAY FROM HEMEL HEMPSTEAD JAILED FOR SICKENING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN ST ALBANS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hemel Hempstead, Andrew Murray, aged 43, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences involving minors.

The crimes, which spanned over two years, included multiple counts of rape and other serious sexual misconduct against children under the age of 13.

The sentencing took place at St Albans Crown Court on Friday, November 8, where Murray received a 24-year prison sentence.

Of this, he will serve at least two-thirds before being eligible for parole, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Additionally, Murray’s name will be permanently listed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, and he will be subject to lifelong monitoring under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The court proceedings revealed that Murray was found guilty by a jury on September 27 of four counts of raping a child under 13.

These convictions alone account for 20 years of his sentence.

The jury also convicted him of other sexual offences, including two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, causing a child to watch a sexual act, attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration on a child under 13, assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child.

The court heard that Murray’s criminal activities involved multiple rapes and sexual offences committed against two victims between February 2017 and March 2019.

His predatory behavior extended to online communications, where he engaged in sexual chats with a child he believed to be 13 years old, from December 2018 to March 2019.

These online exchanges included decoy sexual messages and indecent images, which were part of the evidence leading to his arrest.

Murray’s initial arrest occurred in March 2019 after an online child grooming activist group contacted the police directly.

The group had posed as a 13-year-old girl and engaged in online conversations with Murray, who responded with inappropriate sexual messages and images.

This proactive intervention prompted law enforcement to arrest him, leading to further investigations that uncovered additional offences involving two young victims.

Following his arrest, Murray was remanded in custody and maintained a plea of not guilty during the trial.

However, the jury’s verdict confirmed his guilt on multiple counts of child sexual abuse.

Judge Nigel Lithman QC described Murray’s actions as a “campaign of relentless and heartless abuse against two children,” emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.

As part of his sentence, Murray will serve a minimum of 16 years in prison before being considered for parole.

His lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders’ Register and the ongoing monitoring under the SHPO aim to protect the community from any future harm.

The case has once again highlighted the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in combating online grooming and child exploitation.
