ANDREW GOODLAD SENTENCED IN LERWICK FOR CHILD INDECENCY OFFENSES
A man who downloaded more than 150 indecent images and videos of children, including while he was on bail, has been sentenced to over two years in prison.Andrew Goodlad, of whom the address was listed as Grampian Prison, pleaded guilty at Lerwick Sheriff Court to charges related to offences that occurred between 25 September 2017 and 12 July this year at an address in Lerwick, all while he was on bail.
The case was initially uncovered when police requested to see Goodlad's mobile phone to verify details regarding an unrelated incident.
During the examination, officers found approximately 90 indecent videos on his devices, with 43 classified as the most serious A category.
In addition, they discovered 73 indecent images and 85 thumbnail previews.
Goodlad also admitted to breaching bail conditions multiple times between April and July this year.
During the hearing, defence solicitor Tommy Allan stated at Lerwick Sheriff Court that it was clear that Goodlad needed support to understand how he ended up committing these offences.
Allan added that the 25-year-old, who appeared from custody, did not have full insight into his actions, citing his early developmental difficulties.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank addressed Goodlad directly, saying, "I'm not sure that you quite appreciate how serious these offences are." The sheriff noted that a social work report revealed that Goodlad claimed he accessed the illicit content out of boredom and stupidity.
Sheriff Cruickshank also highlighted that Goodlad continued to download such images after his initial court appearance.
Sentencing, Sheriff Cruickshank imposed an extended sentence of 41 months for the indecent images offence, comprising 17 months in custody plus a further 24 months on licence.
For his repeated breaches of bail conditions, Goodlad received an additional ten months in custody.
This brought his total prison term to 27 months, which was backdated to July when he first entered custody.
Additionally, Goodlad was placed on the sex offenders register.
