SHREWSBURY LABOURER JAILED FOR LIFE OVER MURRELL MURDER

A construction worker received a life sentence for the murder of Hilda Murrell, a 78-year-old rose grower and anti-nuclear activist, committed over two decades ago.

After a four-week trial at Stafford Crown Court, the jury determined that Andrew George, who was 16 at the time of the crime, had forcibly stabbed, sexually assaulted, and kidnapped Ms Murrell, ultimately abandoning her in a Shropshire woodland where she died from exposure.

The 1984 murder of Ms Murrell, a Cambridge graduate with a background in French history, sparked various conspiracy theories implicating security services and the nuclear sector.

Some claims suggested she was targeted because she was scheduled to testify at the Sizewell B nuclear power plant inquiry, while others linked her death to searches for classified documents related to her nephew, Robert Green, involved in naval intelligence during the Falklands conflict.

Labour MP Tam Dalyell even alleged in 1984 that she was killed by British intelligence agents seeking information on the General Belgrano.

These theories led to books, plays, documentaries, and numerous articles, but the jury was told the case was far simpler: George, then a foster child aged 16, broke into her home in Shrewsbury and murdered her.

The last person to see her alive was a neighbor, to whom she had paid 16p for a raffle ticket.

The jury, composed of six men and six women, deliberated over 13 hours before reaching a unanimous verdict.

George was visibly distressed upon hearing the verdict, sobbing and shouting.

Judge Mr Justice Wakerley sentenced him to at least 15 years before parole eligibility, describing the murder as 'unspeakable' and noting the last hours of Ms Murrell as 'truly awful.' He emphasized that George committed the crime as a juvenile and stated that if the act had occurred recently and as an adult, a life sentence without parole would be appropriate.

The court detailed that George had restrained Ms Murrell with an ironing board cover, assaulted her sexually, then stabbed her three times.

He forced her into her car, which he crashed after six miles, and then stabbed her again before discarding her near a tree.

Ms Murrell succumbed to hypothermia hours after being left, with her body found days later after concerns were raised.

Evidence such as DNA from semen and stains on her clothing linked George to the crime, with the probability of a match to any other individual being one in a billion.

In 2002, police reopened the cold case, rechecking thousands of statements, exhibits, and inquiry lines, noting that modern DNA technology could have expedited the resolution and possibly dispelled conspiracy theories.

George, arrested in June 2003 at his home, refused to speak about Ms Murrell's death and attempted to shift blame onto his brother, Steven, claiming they entered her house seeking money.

Prosecutor Richard Latham stated that George realized he was in serious trouble and acted to silence Ms Murrell, illustrating complete disregard and contempt for her in his actions.

Ms Murrell was a prominent figure in Shropshire, recognized as an independent, intelligent, and resilient individual who successfully ran a rose-growing business for years, which she eventually sold to renowned gardener Percy Thrower.
