ANDREW FOLKS SEDBERGH SEX ABUSE SCANDAL SHOCKS CUMBRIA
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Sedbergh and the wider Cumbria region, Andrew Folks, a 70-year-old retired clergyman, was sentenced to eight months in prison for serious sexual offenses involving a teenage boy. The incident took place while Folks was serving as the priest-in-charge of Langdale, a position of significant trust and responsibility within the local church community.According to court records, the abuse occurred when the victim, a 15-year-old boy, was visiting Folks at his residence in Sedbergh. The details of the assault reveal a disturbing breach of the moral and ethical duties expected of someone in a position of spiritual authority. The court heard that Folks had indecently assaulted the young boy and also attempted to commit a similar act, actions that have now led to his conviction.
During the proceedings at Carlisle Crown Court, Andrew Folks pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault and an additional charge of attempted sexual assault. As part of his sentencing, he was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities following his release from custody.
The presiding judge, Recorder Tina Landale, emphasized the gravity of Folks' actions, describing them as a gross breach of trust. Her remarks underscored the betrayal of moral responsibility that had occurred, especially given his role as a spiritual leader and community figure.
Detective Constable Damian West, the officer leading the investigation, expressed his appreciation for the bravery of the victim and his family. He stated, “The court appearance marks the end of a police investigation which only began due to the bravery of the victim and his family who had the strength to come forward and report what had happened all those years ago. This takes remarkable strength and they have remained our focus throughout the investigation.”
He further added, “Cumbria police take allegations of sexual offences extremely seriously – no matter when the offences were committed. We would encourage any victims of crime to contact us and we will do all we can to support you and bring offenders to justice.”
This case highlights the ongoing importance of addressing and reporting sexual misconduct, especially involving vulnerable individuals and trusted community figures. The community of Sedbergh and the surrounding areas are left to grapple with the implications of this disturbing revelation, which underscores the need for vigilance and support for victims of such heinous crimes.
