ANDREW CAFFREY SENTENCED IN IRLAM FOR GROOMING SCHOOLGIRLS ONLINE
In September 2010, a disturbing case of online grooming and child exploitation came to light involving Andrew Caffrey, a 22-year-old IT worker residing in Irlam. Caffrey was found guilty of a series of heinous sex offences against minors after police uncovered a vast collection of illicit material stored on his personal computer.Authorities seized Caffrey’s computer during a raid at his home in Irlam, revealing an alarming cache of approximately 4,000 videos depicting young girls engaged in sexual acts or involved in explicit conversations. These videos, many of which featured girls in their bedrooms without their parents’ knowledge, were part of a larger trove of evidence that included around 27,000 chat logs. The investigation uncovered that Caffrey had communicated with over 10,000 individuals, predominantly targeting girls aged between 12 and 15 years old.
His method involved gaining access to his victims through online platforms, often encouraging them to use webcams and engage in sexual conversations. To manipulate and deceive his victims further, Caffrey created two alternate online identities, 'Jimbob' and 'Rachel,' which he used to maintain contact if his main profile was blocked. This tactic was aimed at convincing the girls that he was a trustworthy individual, even as he continued to exploit their naivety.
One of the most disturbing aspects of his criminal activities was his attempt to meet one of his victims in Greater Manchester, despite knowing she was under 16. This meeting led to further sexual exploitation, highlighting the dangerous extent of his predatory behavior. His actions only came to light after the family of a schoolgirl from Northumberland reported that Caffrey had posted footage of her performing a sexual act online, prompting police to investigate.
Following his arrest, Caffrey admitted to multiple charges, including causing a child to watch a sexual act, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, distributing indecent photographs of a child, possessing such photographs, and meeting a child following sexual grooming. He also pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity with a minor and making indecent images of children.
At Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, Caffrey was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and was issued a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order. This order prohibits him from accessing internet chatrooms and using a camera connected to the internet, aiming to prevent further abuse.
Detective Constable Andy Pilling of Greater Manchester Police’s sexual crime unit expressed his concerns, stating, “Caffrey has been doing this in the privacy of his own bedroom for five years, targeting girls aged between 12 and 15 and exploiting their naivety. He would tell his victims that he would post videos of them online if they didn’t comply, which is what led us to him in the first place. He has upset so many families, including his own. Parents need to be aware of what their children could be exposed to.”
He further emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, urging parents to monitor their children’s online activities carefully. The police highlighted that all the videos involved young girls in private settings, often with their doors shut, underscoring the hidden dangers of internet use. The victims, now trying to move past the trauma, just want to forget what happened and rebuild their lives, authorities said.
