JAIL FOR MALICIOUS MAN WHO POURED BOILING WATER ON WOMAN
A man aged 45 has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of six criminal offences involving abuse against a woman.Andrew Burgis, residing on Beetons Way in Bury St Edmunds, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Friday, 29 May.
He was sentenced to an extended term totaling 20 years, comprising 16 years in prison plus an additional four years on licence.
Extended sentences are typically imposed on individuals convicted of serious violent or sexual crimes, requiring an extra period of supervision after their release to help ensure public safety.
Initially denying the charges, Burgis changed his stance and pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial to several offences, including two counts of intentional strangulation, controlling or coercive behaviour, assault by beating, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
All charges pertained to a single woman.
The court was told that Burgis once poured boiling water onto the victim’s leg during an argument, which caused severe burns and has led to long-lasting scars.
He also strangled her until she lost consciousness, later claiming that she had imagined the incident.
On another occasion, he injured her face by pushing her into furniture.
Beyond physical abuse, Burgis frequently invaded the victim’s privacy by looking through her phone, accompanied her to and from work to monitor her whereabouts, and made persistent calls and messages to her.
