SEX OFFENDER ARRESTED AT TRAIN STATION AFTER ARRANGING TO MEET SCHOOLGIRL FOR SEX
In October 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving Andrew Berry, a man from Swansea who was arrested at a busy train station after attempting to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl for sexual activity.The incident highlights the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts.
Berry, aged 49, who is known to call himself "Randy Andy" on a dating website, engaged in sexually explicit conversations with someone he thought was a young girl.
Unbeknownst to him, he was actually communicating with an undercover police officer.
The court heard that Berry travelled to Cardiff Central Railway Station with the intent to meet the girl, and he was promptly arrested by officers waiting at the scene.
During the court proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Berry had initiated contact in July through a profile on the Fast Flirting website, claiming to be a man interested in meeting a 13-year-old girl named Molly.
The profile was, in fact, operated by an undercover policewoman, who made her age clear to Berry.
The two exchanged phone numbers and email addresses, and over subsequent days, Berry engaged in a series of sexual conversations with the officer posing as Molly.
The court detailed that Berry urged the fictitious girl to perform sexual acts on herself, and recordings of some calls captured him moaning as he apparently masturbated.
The conversations also included discussions about meeting in person, with Berry instructing Molly to wear a skirt and no underwear, expressing his desire to have sex with her.
The prosecutor emphasised that Berry's intentions were clear and disturbing.
On August 6, the pair made arrangements to meet at Cardiff railway station the following day.
Berry told Molly he would arrive at platform two at 2:20 pm and meet her on platform seven, where her train was scheduled to arrive.
The next day, Berry travelled from Swansea to Cardiff by train, and during his journey, he continued communicating with the undercover officer.
He confirmed his arrival time and location, indicating he would meet her on platform seven.
Officers observed Berry disembark from the train at the designated time and head towards platform seven, where he was promptly arrested.
During police interviews, Berry denied ever having contacted Molly via Fast Flirting, Skype, or text messages, claiming that his email must have been hacked.
He insisted that his trip to Cardiff was coincidental and that he was only seeking the toilets on platform seven Berry admitted to using the Fast Flirting site, which he said was how he met his partner, but he denied being "Randy Andy" and refused to disclose his password.
The court noted that Berry, of Ozanam Court, Portmead, Swansea, had a criminal record that included a previous conviction from 1999 for indecent assault on a woman.
In court, Judge Niclas Parry condemned Berry's actions, describing the conversations as "highly sexually explicit" and emphasizing that if the person he was messaging had been a real girl, he would have gone through with sexual intercourse.
Considering his guilty pleas, the judge sentenced Berry to four years in prison, with the possibility of serving up to half of that in custody before being released on license.
Additionally, Berry was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, restricting his access to the internet and contact with minors.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable children from predators operating under false pretences in Swansea, Cardiff, and beyond.
