2013: ANDRE SMITH JAILED FOR 15 YEARS FOR STABBING EX-GIRLFRIEND AT HER KIDDERMINSTER HOME
A jealous ex-boyfriend repeatedly stabbed his pregnant former partner in a “frenzied attack” as their terrified four-year-old son screamed at him to stop. The attacker, Andre Smith, aged 25, broke into Rachel Kane's home in Lea Street, Kidderminster, wielding a nine-inch blade and began attacking her so violently in the hallway that the knife broke and she blacked out.
He then dragged her into the kitchen by her hair, punching her multiple times, and stabbing her in the head and stomach with one of her own knives.
When a plasterers’ knife broke, he turned to a potato peeler to continue his assault before that also broke.
Her screams and those of her child alerted neighbours and her partner, who she had been talking to on the phone when Smith arrived.
Smith fled but was arrested in Hagley shortly after, after ringing the police to confess.
The woman was rushed to hospital with nine stab wounds, six to her abdomen, with injuries including lacerations to her uterus, liver, and a perforated bowel.
She underwent emergency surgery and went into premature labour, delivering a healthy girl a week later via Caesarean section, though she is unlikely to have more children due to internal damage, and she bears permanent scars.
Smith, of Hamstead Road, Great Barr, received a 20-year extended prison sentence at Worcester Crown Court, with a 15-year immediate custody period, and will spend at least two-thirds of that sentence before potential parole, plus a life on licence.
A further charge of attempted child destruction was ordered to lie on file.
