WOMAN SENTENCED AFTER STARVING AND DECOMPOSING ANIMALS

A woman who neglected her eight dogs and a cat in her home, which was infested with maggots, has been handed a suspended jail sentence following her court hearing.

Amy Youll's residence in Todmorden Road, Bacup, Lancashire, was in such a filthy state that RSPCA officers had to wear face masks due to the overwhelming smell of rubbish and faeces.

The house was cluttered with trash, with maggots crawling on kitchen surfaces and rooms so filled with debris that they couldn't be accessed.

The RSPCA rescued the animals a mix of terriers and crossbreeds all of which were matted, underweight, and frightened, some needing to be carried away.

During the investigation, the decomposing bodies of several dogs and a cat were found, along with remains of a pet rodent in an upstairs bedroom.

Youll, who was 31 at the time and from Wythenshawe, denied three animal welfare charges but was convicted in her absence in October 2022.

She received a 12-week suspended prison sentence and was prohibited indefinitely from keeping animals.

RSPCA Chief Inspector Nina Small stated that the conditions the animals endured were among the worst seen in her 20-year career, emphasizing that the animals’ suffering could not be justified.

On September 18, 2021, inspectors found the animals roaming the house, with the floors and surfaces covered in feces, and maggots present on surfaces and tables.

The smell of urine and decay was described as overpowering, with no signs of food, water, or appropriate resting places for the animals.

The dogs were visibly thin, with protruding bones, and all showed signs of severe neglect and anaemia.

The animals' fur and claws were heavily soiled and infested with fleas, with some animals so frightened that they had to be carried out.

They lacked access to fresh water.

A veterinarian testified that, without underlying medical conditions, the animals had likely been starved, and that neglect over a prolonged period had caused significant suffering.

Thanks to the efforts of the RSPCA, all nine animals recovered and were rehomed from the Southport centre.

During a follow-up on September 30, 2021, officers discovered five decomposed dogs in outside containers, primarily in bags, boxes, and planters, along with numerous cat remains.

The decayed bodies were heavily infested and difficult to identify.

Inspector Alison Fletcher described the scene as deeply distressing and among the worst she had viewed, noting the strong smell of decaying flesh was perceptible.

The court also ordered Youll to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities.

It was revealed that she was experiencing mental health problems and struggled with self-care, which contributed to her neglect.

Chief Inspector Nina Small praised the staff and volunteers for their work in rehabilitating the animals.

Another individual involved in similar offences was previously sentenced last November, receiving an eight-year animal ownership ban after pleading guilty.
