ALWYN WILLIAMS FROM WAUNFAWR SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN CAERNARFON

In May 2022, a serious case of child exploitation and possession of illegal images led to the arrest and subsequent sentencing of Alwyn Williams, a resident of Waunfawr. The incident unfolded when law enforcement officials, acting on intelligence, identified Williams as a suspect involved in the possession of prohibited material involving minors.

Williams, aged 52, was taken into custody at his place of employment after police officers visited his residence on May 12 of the previous year. The officers seized his mobile phone, laptop, and charger during the operation. When questioned during an interview, Williams admitted that he had been searching for and viewing what he described as 'cartoon porn' on his laptop. He claimed that some of these images were so realistic that it was difficult to distinguish them from actual photographs of children.

Despite his assertions that he had shredded these images after viewing them, police found a staggering total of 4,225 images stored on his laptop. Williams explained that he had been browsing illicit websites for approximately a year, and he admitted to experiencing a 'buzz' whenever these sites were shut down or taken offline. Additionally, he disclosed that he had accessed extreme pornography involving animals out of curiosity, likening his behavior to an addiction similar to alcohol or drug dependency.

The court proceedings revealed that Williams had previously been prohibited from possessing certain types of images due to prior offenses. However, his latest actions demonstrated a continued pattern of illegal activity. Prosecutor Karl Scholtz highlighted that Williams's conduct involved the possession of images categorized as the most serious (Category A), as well as Categories B and C, which encompass less severe but still illegal content.

Judge Her Honour Nicola Saffman addressed Williams directly during sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes. She stated that children are subjected to horrific abuse—tortured, raped, and sexually exploited—to produce such indecent images. The judge underscored that these are not victimless crimes and that the impact on victims is profound and lasting.

As a result, Williams was sentenced to two years in prison for creating and possessing Category A images. Additionally, he received a concurrent sentence of one year and four months for possessing Category B and C images. A further 12-month sentence was imposed for the possession of prohibited images, all to run concurrently. Beyond imprisonment, Williams was subjected to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his access to children and imposes other controls to prevent further offenses. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of illegal child exploitation material, and the serious consequences faced by those involved.
