ALWYN WILLIAMS AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN WAUNFARR
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Alwyn Williams, a 52-year-old resident of Waunfawr, was implicated in possessing a staggering collection of over 4,000 images depicting what he described as 'cartoon porn,' which he claimed was so realistic that it was nearly impossible to distinguish these images from actual photographs of children.Police authorities, acting on intelligence and following investigations into illegal online activity, identified Williams as a person of interest and launched an operation to search his residence. The operation took place on May 12 of the previous year, and law enforcement officers moved swiftly to apprehend him at his workplace, a decision driven by the seriousness of the allegations.
During the investigation, multiple devices, including Williams’s mobile phone, laptop, and a charger, were confiscated. The authorities found an alarming number of images stored on his laptop—specifically, 4,225 images that fell under the category of prohibited material involving children.
In police interviews, Williams claimed that he had been engaging with these images for about a year and justified his actions by stating that some images appeared so realistic that he believed they were “cartoons.” When questioned about the legality and morality of his collection, he admitted to having shredded some of these images, a claim that was contradicted by the evidence. Prosecutors pointed out that the actual seized data demonstrated he had not destroyed any of the illicit images.
Williams also revealed that he had been exploring highly extreme internet content, including images involving animals, driven by what he described as curiosity. He likened his addiction to these images to dependence on alcohol or drugs, implying a compulsive behavior he struggled to control.
The prosecution highlighted that Williams's previous convictions had already prohibited him from possessing certain categories of explicit images, making his current offense particularly severe. Despite his attempts to justify his actions, the court heard that the images in question represented some of the most serious types—Category A, which signifies the most severe and illegal level of child exploitation imagery.
His defense attorney, Laura Knightly, argued that Williams’s actions should not be classified as contact offenses and emphasized her client’s remorse. She stated that he had expressed intentions to seek help and had even planned to contact the Internet Watch charity, an organization dedicated to reducing online child abuse content.
However, the presiding judge, Her Honour Nicola Saffman, delivered a stern warning about the heinous crimes of which Williams was guilty. She emphasized that such images are rooted in the torture, rape, and sexual abuse of children, underlining the fact that these are not victimless crimes.
Williams was ultimately sentenced to a cumulative prison term of two years for the most serious offense—possessing a Category A indecent image of a child—along with an additional 1 year and 4 months for possessing Category B and C images. All sentences are set to run concurrently. Furthermore, he received a 12-month imprisonment for the possession of the prohibited images, also to be served alongside the others.
In addition to his incarceration, Williams was subject to a stringent sexual harm prevention order that will restrict his access to children and impose other controls for a period of ten years, reflecting the ongoing concern over safeguarding the community from potential future harm.
