MAIDSTONE DOMESTIC ABUSER ALEX BUCKWELL SENTENCED FOR BRUTALITY AND COERCIVE CONTROL
A man from Maidstone, identified as Alex Buckwell, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of severe domestic abuse incidents against his partner. The court heard that Buckwell subjected his partner to relentless physical assaults and psychological torment throughout their relationship, demonstrating a pattern of controlling and violent behavior that left her in a state of constant fear and distress.Buckwell, who resided on Hollingworth Road in Maidstone, exercised near-total dominance over his partner’s life. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that he imposed strict restrictions on her activities, including forcing her to delete her social media accounts and forbidding her from communicating with other men. He employed a tracking application to monitor her movements constantly, and he would often shout insults at her, accusing her of trying to attract male attention through her clothing and makeup choices.
The violence reached a disturbing peak on November 30, when Buckwell physically assaulted her in front of a child. He repeatedly kicked, strangled, and punched her during this incident, and he also prevented her from leaving their home. Court proceedings uncovered additional disturbing episodes, such as Buckwell deliberately driving his vehicle towards her and forcibly dragging her back into a car by her hair. His destructive tendencies extended to damaging property, including a mirror, television, fridge, and her mobile phone. Despite their separation, Buckwell continued to torment her by making phone calls from withheld numbers, further demonstrating his coercive control.
Buckwell admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive behavior from February to November of the previous year. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court sentenced him to two years and five months in prison for his actions. Detective Constable Frazer Meeks described Buckwell as a “cowardly bully” who inflicted profound misery on his victim. He urged other victims of domestic abuse to come forward and seek help, emphasizing that no one should feel trapped or unable to leave an abusive relationship.
The verdict was delivered at Maidstone Crown Court, where Buckwell was found guilty of multiple charges, including physical violence and emotional abuse. His imprisonment marks a significant step in addressing domestic violence in the area, and authorities hope it will serve as a warning to others who might perpetrate similar acts of coercion and brutality.
