MAN JAILED FOR ATTACK ON HIS OWN FATHER IN ROW OVER MONEY
A man from Mid Wales, Aled Powell-Jones, aged 49, has received a prison sentence after assaulting his 79-year-old father, leaving the elderly man with significant, life-altering injuries.Powell-Jones was sentenced to 20 months behind bars and was also issued a restraining order, following the incident that occurred during an argument over financial matters.
At Caernarfon Crown Court last week, it was highlighted that the assault had fundamentally changed the victim’s life.
Once described as healthy and mobile, the elder Powell-Jones now walks with crutches and requires physiotherapy due to the injuries sustained.
The court heard he had to crawl to his car before driving away.
The assault took place on January 7 earlier this year.
In the altercation, Powell-Jones pushed his father onto the ground and then kicked him while he was down.
His father sustained a fractured hip that necessitated surgical intervention.
Following his arrest the next day, Powell-Jones claimed to police that he had only "gently tapped" his father with his foot.
Previously, Powell-Jones had admitted to a charge of wounding without intent.
His defence argued that his family had been providing financial support, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, and also stated that his mental health had been deteriorating for the past seven years.
In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Timothy Petts ordered a 10-year restraining order, banning Powell-Jones from entering Tal-y-bont once he is released.
