FAMILY DEVASTATED AS MAN KILLS MOTHER AFTER MISSED EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA

Alan Williams, now 23, was convicted of manslaughter for the death of his mother, Lorraine Cullen, 43, on May 11, 2022, in Huyton.

The court heard that Williams had moved into his own flat in January 2022, leaving his previous residence with his grandparents.

On the evening of May 10, he was meant to stay at his mother’s home but instead left with his eight-year-old sister shortly before midnight and returned to his apartment.

The next morning, he confirmed via text message to his grandfather that his sister was with him.

Later, Williams told his grandmother, Angela Dalzell, in a phone call that he had 'killed his mother by hitting her on the head' and believed she was now 'in a better place.' His grandmother found Lorraine Cullen’s body face down in a pool of blood with three knives lying nearby.

An autopsy revealed she had suffered 30 incised wounds to her head and upper torso, indicating a brutal and sustained attack.

The family criticized medical professionals for failing to recognize warning signs; Williams had exhibited worrying behaviors prior, including hearing voices, carrying a weapon, and believing he was being poisoned.

He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in February 2019, after a previous misdiagnosis of autism, which experts designated as a 'catastrophic misdiagnosis.' Williams was detained under the Mental Health Act and received treatment at a secure hospital in high-security conditions.

His defense team argued that his mental health condition was the cause of the fatal attack.

KC Nina Grahame described Williams as an 'intelligent, kind, gentle, and loving young man' vulnerable to his mental illness.

He admitted to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

The court ordered his detention in a hospital setting under sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act, where he will remain until considered suitable for release.

The judge pointed out the failures in mental health diagnosis and treatment and expressed hope that continued care would facilitate his recovery, stating that 'your length of detention depends on your response to treatment and the risk you pose to others.' The family expressed their devastation over the loss and their disappointment with the mental health system’s handling of the case, emphasizing their wish for him to receive treatment rather than prison to prevent further suffering.
