ELGIN MAN JAILED FOR CAMPAIGN OF CONTROLLING, VIOLENT AND SEXUAL ABUSE
Alan Turner isolated a woman from friends and family, controlled her finances and monitored her whereabouts, as well as subjecting her to violence and non-consensual sexual acts.At the High Court in Kilmarnock this week, Turner was sentenced to a seven-year custodial term, with an extension period of 12 months, which will involve release on licence under supervision.
During a trial in Inverness, the 52-year-old had denied engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive of his former partner, but was found guilty by a jury.
The jury heard evidence of how, at various addresses in Elgin, Turner acted in an aggressive manner towards the woman, shouting and swearing at her, uttering derogatory remarks towards her and calling her abusive names.
He woke the woman from sleep and forced her to prepare food and watch a film with him.
He isolated the woman from her family and friends and monitored her whereabouts, insisting that she call him from her employer’s landline or videocall him.
Turner also controlled the woman’s finances and access to money.
He made her install a gambling app on his mobile phone, which was funded by money from her own account.
But the abuse was not just controlling, with Turner’s conviction also including details of violence against the woman and non-consensual sexual acts.
He asked her for sex, shouted and swore, dragged her by the body and carried out sexual acts without her consent.
On one occasion, Turner followed the woman to the bedroom where he argued with her, seizing her by the throat, pushing her against a bed, and compressing her throat, restricting her breathing and causing her to lose consciousness, to her injury and to the danger of her life.
At a sentencing hearing, Turner was handed an extended sentence of eight years – backdated to December 10 of last year.
This sentence comprises a custodial term of seven years and an extension period of 12 months – during which he will be on licence.
Turner, of Spynie Street, Elgin, was also made subject to a non-harassment order preventing him from approaching or contacting the woman for an indefinite period.
As his offending was deemed “to be of a significant sexual nature”, Turner was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
