ALAN SHEPHERD SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES IN CLEETHORPES AND BARNSEY
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Cleethorpes and Barnsley, Alan Shepherd, a man previously residing on Brereton Road in Cleethorpes, has been handed a substantial prison sentence of 14 years.The conviction follows a lengthy trial at Hull Crown Court, where Shepherd was found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences committed against three young girls from Barnsley.
Shepherd, aged 68 at the time of sentencing, faced a total of 12 charges, including 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of rape.
The victims, whose identities are protected by law, were all under the age of 16 when the abuse occurred.
The court proceedings revealed the disturbing extent of Shepherd’s misconduct, which spanned over a period during which the victims were vulnerable and trusting.
The investigation into Shepherd’s actions was initiated in 2016, after one of the victims, now an adult, courageously came forward to report her traumatic experiences.
Her bravery in speaking out marked the beginning of a broader inquiry that eventually uncovered the full scope of Shepherd’s offending.
The detective leading the case, DC Elinor Duke, expressed her admiration for the victim’s strength, stating, “Her strength and courage is remarkable and I commend her for taking this brave step.” As the investigation progressed, additional victims came forward, revealing a pattern of abuse that had remained hidden for years.
The evidence presented in court painted a disturbing picture of Shepherd’s predatory behaviour.
Throughout the trial, Shepherd maintained his innocence, refusing to accept responsibility for his actions.
His denial forced the victims to relive their painful experiences as they recounted their ordeals before the jury.
DC Duke emphasized the importance of justice being served, saying, “I am pleased he has been convicted and sent to prison.
I only hope this result offers the victims some form of closure and that they are able to find the strength to move forward with their lives.” The sentencing marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and highlights the ongoing need to protect vulnerable individuals from such heinous crimes.
