ALAN RILEY FROM LENTON JAILED FOR IMPORTING CHILDLIKE SEX DOLL IN SHOCKING CASE

In July 2017, a disturbing case unfolded at Nottingham Crown Court involving Alan Riley, a 63-year-old resident of Petersham Mews, Lenton. Riley was convicted and subsequently sentenced for the illegal importation of a childlike sex doll from China, a crime that has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about the safety and monitoring of known sex offenders.

During the court proceedings, the offending object, a doll with rubberized skin dressed in stockings, suspenders, and a dress adorned with small rabbit images, was brought into the courtroom for the judge to examine. The doll, which had been purchased for approximately £300 and weighed less than three stones, was presented as evidence of Riley’s illegal activities. The court was informed that the doll’s measurements were compared to data from the World Health Organization, revealing that its size and weight closely resembled that of a child aged between two years nine months and four years ten months, with an average age of about three years and eight months.

Prosecutor Abigail Hill explained that Riley had admitted to buying the doll some time ago because it was inexpensive, claiming it was an oriental woman. Riley stated that he did not like the doll and only used it to watch television, dismissing any suggestion that it was intended for sexual purposes. However, the court noted that Riley had previously been on the sex offenders’ register and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which was imposed after he was caught possessing indecent images of children. The police discovered Riley’s latest collection of disturbing images during a search of his computer, which had been used to download additional indecent material involving minors.

Riley had also pleaded guilty to making indecent images of a child, and his actions were found to be in breach of the court order designed to monitor his contact with children and his computer usage. During police interviews, Riley claimed that he bought the doll “a while ago” because it was cheap and that he believed it to be an oriental woman. He also stated that he did not use the doll for sexual purposes and only watched television with it.

Solicitor Lauren Fisher, representing Riley, expressed that her client found it difficult to admit to ordering the doll and emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest he had used it sexually. She added that Riley maintained he had only watched television with the doll and had not engaged in any inappropriate activity involving it.

Judge James Sampson, who presided over the case, requested to see the doll himself, describing the case as extraordinary. The doll was taken into a back room for the judge to examine, wrapped entirely in brown paper. The judge later described the doll as a “chilling model of a child” and stated that it was clearly imported for sexual gratification, given its sexualized appearance.

Riley was sentenced to 16 months in prison for the importation offence, with an additional eight months for the possession of indecent images, to be served consecutively. The court also imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifetime order requiring Riley to sign the sex offenders’ register. Furthermore, the court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of Riley’s computer equipment and the doll itself. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “It was certainly imported for sexual gratification. It is dressed in a sexual manner. It is a chilling model of a child.” The case has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in monitoring and managing individuals with a history of sexual offenses, especially when it involves such disturbing and illegal items as the childlike doll.
