ALAN MASSIE SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR BRUTAL MURDER OF RETIRED DOCTOR WILLIAM YULE IN FORFAR
On 6 December 2022, Alan Massie, 32 years old, was condemned by a judge who described him as 'evil' and 'cowardly' following the killing of William Yule, a retired doctor aged 90, at his home in Forfar.
Massie had broken into Mr.
Yule’s house with the goal of stealing his car keys but then attacked him violently and without mercy.
The court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years, with Lord Fairley stating that the assault was 'as brutal as it was cowardly' and demonstrated an evil 'beyond the reach of normal understanding.' The judge highlighted that Massie’s criminal record included numerous convictions for theft, housebreaking, shoplifting, drug-related offenses, disorder, and violence, and that he had shown little respect for court rulings.
The victim, Dr.
Yule, who was well-respected and widely loved, was especially vulnerable at age 90, still residing in his family home with the help of carers after his wife’s death in 2015.
The evidence showed that Massie’s initial intent was theft, but he then committed a murder through a savage assault.
Following the crime, Massie was quickly arrested nearby.
The community and the police expressed their shock at the incident and hoped that the verdict would bring some measure of closure to the family of the deceased.
