MAN JAILED FOR ONLINE CHILD ABUSE AFTER PAEDOPHILE HUNTER STING

An Elgin man snared by paedophile hunters posing as 13-year-old girls online is behind bars.

The trial revealed that Ailean Kerr had sent explicit images to the decoy profiles and inquired about their developmental stages.

Judge Ian Cruickshank sentenced Kerr to 15 months in prison and emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from online predators.

Kerr appeared at the court after being convicted by a jury on two counts of attempting to induce an underage person to view sexual images and engaging in indecent communication with a minor, during the period from November 2020 to January 2021.

During proceedings, members of the decoy operation testified about their interactions with Kerr on the dating app Mingle, which featured profiles created with AI-modified photos to resemble children.

They informed Kerr that they were only 13 years old.

According to evidence presented by prosecutor Emily Hood, the decoy women, part of a volunteer group called Shatter the Silence, recounted that Kerr called them “sexy” and asked inappropriate questions, including one about their sexual anatomy.

He also made remarks about traveling to meet one of the decoy profiles in Edinburgh and expressed a desire to see her naked.

Screenshots of the conversations were collected by decoy operators and handed over to the police.

Kerr admitted to sending the messages and images, some of which were found stored on his devices, but claimed they were not sexually motivated, asserting he was conducting an 'investigation' instead.

Kerr stated he believed the profiles were not operated by real children, citing suspicious signs such as the use of underage images on sites requiring users to be over 18 and mismatched location data.

He insisted these inconsistencies prompted his scrutiny.

Nevertheless, the jury took less than two hours to unanimously convict him of both charges.

During sentencing, Kerr’s solicitor requested a community-based sentence, citing a low risk of reoffending based on a pre-sentencing report.

However, Sheriff Cruickshank pointed out that the report’s author accepted Kerr’s denial of any sexual motivation, contrary to the jury’s findings.

The sheriff criticized Kerr’s attempt to deny responsibility and noted evidence of him engaging in sexual communications and sharing explicit images for his own gratification.

The sheriff reaffirmed the importance of protecting children online and sentenced Kerr to 15 months, with a ten-year sex offender registration requirement.
