ADAM THOMSON PENSIONER FROM PETERSFIELD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON CHILD IN WINCHESTER
In June 2008, a disturbing case unfolded at Winchester Crown Court involving Adam Thomson, a 67-year-old man from Petersfield, who was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault against a young girl. Thomson, who previously resided on Station Road in Petersfield, faced serious charges related to his inappropriate conduct towards a minor, with the court hearing that he had committed seven counts of indecent assault on the girl, who was between the ages of seven and 14 at the time of the offenses.Thomson, described as grey-haired and wearing glasses, was not only convicted but also sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Following the charges, he had moved to a bail hostel near Southampton. During the sentencing, he sat silently and expressionless, staring straight ahead without making eye contact with the victim’s family members, who were visibly distressed and upset in the courtroom.
Throughout the proceedings, Thomson faced a total of 12 counts of indecent assault on a minor female. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial, denying all charges. The jury found him not guilty of three of the counts, and the judge directed a not guilty verdict on two additional counts. Despite this, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him on seven counts.
The victim’s mother expressed her anguish after the case concluded, stating, “That man has taken away my daughter’s childhood. He has damaged her for life. What’s three years? He could be out of prison in 18 months.” She also praised her daughter’s bravery, saying, “The only good thing is that my daughter has been proven to have been telling the truth and she was brave enough to give evidence against him.”
Judge Andrew Barnett delivered the sentence, emphasizing the severity of Thomson’s actions. He stated, “There are no mitigating circumstances. You made this child thoroughly miserable,” underscoring the gravity of the offenses and the lasting impact on the victim’s life.
