LIAM GUY FROM PETERSFIELD ESCAPES PRISON AFTER ABUSING GIRL IN NYEWOOD
In a case that has left a lasting scar on a young girl from Nyewood, Liam Guy, aged 38, of Furze Meadow, Petersfield, appeared before Portsmouth Crown Court in May 2019 to face charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor. The court heard that Guy had committed three separate offences against the same girl, all of which took place in 2008. These incidents have profoundly affected her life, leaving her with ongoing emotional and psychological struggles.During the proceedings, Guy pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault on a child under the age of 13, as well as inciting her to engage in sexual activity. The court was informed that the offences involved disturbing acts, including Guy stroking the girl’s chest and placing her hand on his genitalia. These acts occurred over a period of time, and the girl, who is now an adult, has since spoken out about the lasting impact of her trauma.
As the case moved towards sentencing, the court heard a heartfelt statement from the victim, read out by prosecutor Jeffrey Lamb. She expressed her ongoing struggles with trust and her fear of encountering Guy in everyday life. She revealed that she is often anxious when leaving her home in Petersfield, describing herself as constantly stressed. The girl also shared that her mental health has been affected to the extent that she has been prescribed medication for sleep issues, nightmares, and flashbacks, which are symptoms of her trauma.
Judge David Melville QC acknowledged the severity of the crimes committed but took into account Guy’s remorse and his immediate confession to police in 2017. The judge noted that if Guy had not admitted guilt early on, the sentence might have been much harsher. Ultimately, Guy was sentenced to two concurrent sentences of two years each, but these were suspended for two years. Additionally, a restraining order was imposed to prevent any contact with the victim, and Guy will be on the sex offenders register for the next ten years. As part of his sentence, he was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £340 in court costs.
Despite the gravity of his actions, the court’s decision reflects a consideration of his remorse and cooperation, aiming to balance justice with the potential for rehabilitation.
