ADAM MARRIOTT FROM MEXBOROUGH SENTENCED IN SHEFFIELD FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Adam Marriott, a resident of Mexborough, was brought before Sheffield Crown Court in February 2019 to face charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior involving the download and subsequent deletion of highly illegal and disturbing material.Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, serving as the Recorder of Sheffield, made a notable decision in this case. Instead of opting for a custodial sentence, he chose to impose a community order, emphasizing the potential for rehabilitation over punishment. The judge expressed his belief that Marriott could benefit more from an intensive community-based program, which might offer him a chance to turn his life around, rather than a prison term.
During the sentencing, Judge Richardson stated, “It seems to me that the public interest would be best served by trying to rehabilitate you, by pulling you away from what most people would regard as filth of the highest order. If that can be done, then something will be achieved, good can come out of the bad.” He further added, “I’m throwing you a lifeline to pull yourself away from this depravity. Seize it with both hands, pull yourself into a better life.”
The case against Marriott was initiated in August 2017, when police conducted an operation targeting individuals involved in the distribution of child abuse images. During this operation, authorities visited Marriott’s residence in Mexborough, where they discovered his computer and two external hard drives. These devices were later examined by forensic analysts, revealing the presence of multiple illegal images.
Prosecutor Carl Fitch detailed the findings, stating that Marriott was found in possession of two Category A images, which are classified as the most severe, depicting children being raped. Additionally, he possessed four Category B images, two Category C images, and a staggering 257 prohibited animated images that portrayed pseudo-children being abused. Although Marriott had downloaded these images between April and August 2017 and attempted to delete them, forensic analysis was able to recover the material.
Marriott, who was 31 years old at the time, admitted to full knowledge of his actions during police interviews. He confessed that he viewed these images for sexual gratification. The court was informed that Marriott had no previous convictions, and he pleaded guilty to four counts of making indecent images of children during an earlier hearing.
Under the law, the term ‘making’ an indecent image encompasses actions such as opening, accessing, downloading, and storing online content. The case highlighted the serious nature of his offenses and the legal implications involved.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Richardson noted that the pre-sentence report painted a picture of a man who had endured a profoundly sad life, marked by the loss of his mother during childhood. This context was considered in the judge’s decision to impose a two-year community order, which includes conditions such as up to 36 days of participation in a group program for offenders and a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
Furthermore, Marriott was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for the same duration. The purpose of the SHPO is to prevent further offenses by imposing restrictions, such as banning the possession of internet-enabled devices that could be used to access or delete browsing history related to illegal content. This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the judiciary to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, while also highlighting the importance of rehabilitation in such cases.
