ADAM DAY FROM CHESTERTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In November 2016, Adam Day, a resident of Chesterton, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl. The incident involved Day, aged 31 at the time, who engaged in inappropriate and criminal conduct towards the schoolgirl, which included kissing her, stroking her, and touching her private parts. The court proceedings revealed that Day's actions were of a sexual nature and caused significant harm to the victim.

Day faced two charges of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. He denied these allegations throughout the trial, which concluded on September 2 at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Despite his denial, a jury found him guilty of the charges after careful deliberation. The court's decision resulted in a five-year prison sentence for Day, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses.

During the sentencing hearing, Adam Watkins, representing the defendant, emphasized that Day had no prior criminal record and maintained his innocence. Watkins described Day as a young man who was hardworking but naive, with limited relationship experience, having only two brief relationships in his life. He argued that Day's conduct was unsophisticated, lacking any predatory intent or planning, and characterized his actions as isolated incidents rather than part of a pattern of behavior.

However, the judge, Recorder Andrew Easteal, made it clear that the severity of the crime warranted strict measures. He ordered that Day be placed on the sex offenders' register for life and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future conduct until further notice. In his remarks to Day, Recorder Easteal stated, “You were convicted by a jury after trial of two allegations of sexually assaulting a girl. You took an opportunity to abuse her at a very intimate level.”

The judge highlighted the lasting impact such abuse can have on a young victim, noting that it could affect her confidence and future relationships. He expressed concern over the unknown long-term effects of the abuse as the girl matures. Despite Day's continued insistence on his innocence, the judge acknowledged that his actions were serious and not predatory in nature, but emphasized that this did not diminish the gravity of his misconduct. The court's ruling underscores the importance of addressing such offenses with the utmost seriousness to protect vulnerable individuals and uphold justice.
