SIMON GRAND FROM CHESTERTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH SCHOOLGIRL IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In August 2011, Simon Grand, a 22-year-old man from Chesterton, was sentenced to prison after admitting to engaging in sexual activity with a teenage girl. The incident took place while his partner was pregnant, and the case was heard at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

Prosecutor Benjamin Close revealed that during police interviews, Grand confessed to having had consensual sex with the girl, fully aware of her age. He stated that the sexual encounter was consensual and that he did not use any form of protection during the act. Grand, who resides on Beasley Avenue in Chesterton, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual activity with a child.

Robin Lichfield, representing the defendant, highlighted that Grand had experienced a challenging childhood. He emphasized that Grand had no prior criminal record and was living with his girlfriend and their two children at the time of the offence. Lichfield pointed out that there was no evidence to suggest the act was premeditated and requested the court to consider a minimal sentence, acknowledging the seriousness of the offence.

Judge Paul Glenn sentenced Grand to two years in prison. Additionally, Grand will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and will be prohibited from engaging in activities involving children. The judge remarked that although the act was consensual and the girl appeared to have initiated the encounter, the circumstances were still grave.

Addressing Grand directly, Judge Glenn noted, “What occurred was consensual. On your account to the police, she was enthusiastic and instigated matters.” The judge also acknowledged Grand’s personal difficulties, stating, “I accept you are immature and your knowledge of sex may be basic. The fact is you have two children and your girlfriend would have been pregnant when this offence took place.”

The court considered sentencing guidelines that suggested a custodial term of four years for this type of offence. However, Judge Glenn explained his decision, saying, “I think that is too high in this case. It was a single offence, it was spontaneous, you caused no physical harm, I am not told of the psychological effect, the age gap was not great, and your immaturity is pronounced. Nevertheless, it is so serious only custody is appropriate.”

Grand is expected to serve approximately half of his two-year sentence in custody, with the remainder on license, underlining the court’s stance on the gravity of his actions.
