ADAM CULVERWELL SENTENCED IN YEOVIL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF VULNERABLE PATIENTS

In a case that has shocked the community of Yeovil, Adam Culverwell, a psychiatric nurse, has been handed a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious charges related to the sexual exploitation of a vulnerable patient under his care.

Adam Culverwell, aged 53 and residing in Hardington, a suburb of Yeovil, was found guilty on several counts, including eight charges of a care worker causing or inciting sexual activity with a mentally disordered person, with acts involving penetration. The conviction follows a detailed investigation into allegations that surfaced in June 2021, revealing a disturbing pattern of misconduct.

The incident involved Culverwell engaging in sexual activities with a patient while performing his duties as a community psychiatric nurse for Dorset Healthcare Trust. The victim, who was under Culverwell’s care from September 2016 until December 2020, was described as a person with complex mental health issues, making them particularly vulnerable to exploitation. The court heard that Culverwell exploited his professional position to satisfy his own sexual desires, a betrayal of the trust placed in him by both the patient and the healthcare system.

Detective Constable Chloe Riley of Dorset Police emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that Culverwell used his authority as a healthcare professional to manipulate and abuse the patient. The investigation was described as complex, involving a wide array of evidence including witness statements, medical records, CCTV footage, and phone records. Prosecutors at Bournemouth Crown Court argued that Culverwell was fully aware of the patient’s mental health challenges and deliberately exploited his role to carry out these acts.

The court proceedings culminated on June 6, with Culverwell being sentenced to seven years in prison. Dorset Police publicly acknowledged the bravery of the victim for coming forward and reporting the abuse, which was instrumental in bringing Culverwell to justice. Dorset Healthcare Trust issued a statement condemning Culverwell’s actions as a 'gross betrayal' of the trust placed in healthcare professionals. The Trust also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding patients, stating that Culverwell was immediately suspended once the allegations came to light, and that they remain dedicated to maintaining professional boundaries and ensuring patient safety at all times.
