A man named Adam Betteridge has been convicted of possessing indecent images of children being 'brutalised'.
During the sentencing at Inverness Sheriff Court, a sheriff remarked, "Their lives [were] destroyed for your entertainment" to first offender Betteridge.
It was revealed that investigators found on his phone 14 of the most serious child abuse images classified as Category A, along with one 10-second video.
Additionally, there were three images in Category B and two in Category C, all of which were inaccessible and had been downloaded between September 29, 2019, and September 8, 2022, the day before the police searched his home.
Betteridge claimed he had accessed the images accidentally, supported by a search history with terms such as "pedo", "youngest" and "hairless".
His solicitor stated that he was going through a "dark" period with mental health issues during the time of the offense.
However, Sheriff Aitken expressed little sympathy, stating, "No matter how bad you think your mental health was [...] I can assure you that the children you watched being brutalised would be significantly more affected than you ever were, and their lives destroyed for your entertainment." As a result, Betteridge was sentenced to a Community Payback Order for three years with 160 hours of unpaid community work, he must complete the Moray sex offenders program, and he is on the sex offenders register for three years.
