A mosque instructor named Abu Sumel received a prison sentence exceeding three years after attempting to meet a teenager he believed to be 14 years old.
The court proceedings revealed that Sumel, who was 23 years old at the time of the 2021 incident, engaged in online conversations with a decoy girl over a period of more than two months.
He urged her to send photos and discussed plans to meet her in person, even offering to cover the cost of an Uber to transport her to his home.
Prosecutor Alisha Kaye recounted that Sumel called the girl 'beautiful' and expressed his desire to see her completely, despite initially claiming he was only 17.
During their exchanges, he also sent images of a banana and a plastic penis.
Sumel, who was married, had no prior convictions, and had recently arrived in the UK, began to cry in court.
The judge sentenced him to three years and four months in prison, mandated lifetime registration as a sex offender, and ordered him to follow a sexual harm prevention order for five years.
