Abid Mahmood was sentenced to a lifetime hospital order after being found guilty of murdering his estranged wife by stabbing her in Oldham. The incident happened on Water Mill Avenue, with emergency services arriving at around 7 pm on Monday, 8 November 2021.
At the scene, two victims were located with stab injuries: Tamby Dowling, aged 36, who died at the scene from multiple stab wounds, some as deep as 18 centimeters, including one that pierced her heart, and a 16-year-old girl who sustained leg injuries and was taken to hospital.
Mahmood, who reportedly has mental health issues, had appeared unannounced, forced entry into the residence, and attacked Ms.
Dowling by punching her before stabbing her repeatedly with a large knife as she lay on the floor.
Following the attack, he surrendered himself to police while still holding the weapon in his waistband.
He faced charges of her murder.
During the court hearing, Mahmood pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and also admitted to a section 18 assault on the teenage girl, resulting in a six-year sentence to be served alongside his other penalties.
The court imposed a lifetime hospital order, with a minimum of ten years.
A family tribute described Tamby as a warm, generous, and lively person who had a positive impact on those around her, emphasizing the severity of her injuries and the violence involved.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe stated he hoped the sentence would bring some comfort to Tamby's family and highlighted the importance of contacting authorities if there is a concern about violence.
The incident is seen as a tragic example of violence directed at women and girls.
