BRADFORD MAN JAILED FOR BLACKMAIL AND ABDUCTION ATTEMPTS
A Bradford man has been sentenced after he 'blackmailed' the victim of his previous abuse into meeting him and then drove her 70 miles across the country. In January this year, 37-year-old Abdul Mahmood was jailed for 144 days for offences related to careless driving and assault involving the same woman, and a judge also imposed an indefinite restraining order.
Despite being released from custody in January 2025, Mahmood continued to harass the woman with incessant messages from late January to March.
Prosecutors explained that Mahmood 'virtually blackmailed' the woman into meeting up on the day of the incident.
He lured her into his car under the pretense of repentance during Ramadan and drove her towards the Trafford Centre, but then drove her to Cheshire Oaks retail park where he refused to let her leave the vehicle.
The woman managed to escape after her bracelet, which Mahmood was holding, opened and she called the police.
She reported suffering from sleepless nights and weight loss due to Mahmood’s behavior.
Mahmood pleaded guilty to breaching the restraining order, and the court considered the seriousness of the offense, with the judge stating Mahmood had 'left the woman suffering serious harm' and was 'very lucky not to have been charged with kidnap.' Ultimately, Mahmood was sentenced to immediate imprisonment, and a new indefinite restraining order was imposed, forbidding him from contacting the victim or approaching her residence.
Defense barrister Fuad Arshad acknowledged his client's immaturity and emotional regulation issues.
