SWANSEA MAN SENTENCED FOR NEGLECTING DOG WITH UNTREATED HEALTH ISSUES
During the investigation, it was found that Aaron Francis, a 27-year-old man from Nicander Parade, Mayhill, Swansea, was responsible for the neglect and ill treatment of Bear, a Tibetan Mastiff. The dog was discovered with severe mats in his coat, cherry eye, and hip dysplasia, all untreated by the owners.
Both defendants pleaded guilty in Swansea Magistrates' Court to an offence under the Animal Welfare Act.
The charge detailed that between June 13 and December 15 of the previous year, they failed to meet Bear's needs, including protecting him from pain and injury by neglecting to investigate or address his health issues.
The court sentenced each to 12 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months, and ordered them to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activity.
Additionally, they received a five-year ban on keeping animals and were each fined £400 plus a £154 victim surcharge.
The court also acknowledged that the defendants were naive and unaware of the specific breed's needs, with one having an injury affecting daily life.
After initial treatment and de-matting, Bear was placed into another charity’s care, but he was later diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia and euthanized.
The RSPCA emphasized the importance of pet owners seeking help for health issues before they worsen, with deputy chief inspector Gemma Cooper stating, “We are saddened that Bear was found with these untreated conditions.
We would like to remind pet owners to please seek help if they are struggling.
Don’t bury your head in the sand and leave conditions untreated and for them to become worse.”
