RESIDENT IN MAPPERLEY JAILED FOR THEFT AND ARMED ROBBERY

A resident living in sheltered accommodation stole a cherished games console and held a knife to the neck of an elderly visitor and demanded cash.

Aaron Dimond was living in Blyth Street, Mapperley, when he carried out his crimes.

He took a Nintendo Switch console from one resident when she left her room unlocked, and sold it for £20.

The victim was reimbursed from a fund to cover part of her £338 loss.

She said in a statement the console was "the first expensive thing she had bought herself".

Then Dimond attempted to rob an elderly visitor - a former resident who returned every Sunday for lunch.

The 29-year-old held the blade of a large kitchen knife to the left side of the man's neck and said "give me your money".

He was told to "get off" when he grabbed the man's pocket where the money was.

Nottingham Crown Court heard this victim said afterwards he was very upset "this horrible thing happened to me" and "it did scare me".

Digby Johnson, mitigating, said when Dimond was 24 years old he was "largely getting on with life pretty decently".

Describing him as "never particularly gifted", he told how his client struggled socially, had a child and was married.

Then he was attacked in Bulwell and there was "a change in his personality after that" and a breakdown in his relationship.

He later in August needed money again and the person he diverted his attention to was an elderly man with mobility issues.

"He wasn't prepared to give you that money," he added.

He noted Dimond had struggled with his mental health, was immediately remorseful and admitted the offences to police.

The judge asked him to maintain contact with a psychiatrist and psychiatric team, keep taking his medication, stay living with his family and out of trouble.

The court deferred sentencing him for burglary and attempted robbery until March 30 next year.

He said later on in August, Dimond needed money again and the person he diverted his attention to was an elderly man with mobility issues.

"He wasn't prepared to give you that money," he added.
