VICIOUS DOMESTIC ABUSER JAILED FOR SIX YEARS OVER ATTACK
A man with a documented history of domestic violence was caught on CCTV assaulting his partner by kicking and stamping on her head and then boasting to her stepfather that she would be unable to walk.Nicholas Bright, aged 38, flew into a jealous rage after wrongly suspecting his girlfriend was flirting at a music festival.
His violent reaction was delayed until they reached her home in Basildon later that evening.
The full assault was recorded on the victim’s home security footage and was also overheard in a phone call with her stepfather.
During the attack, Bright expressed his intent to leave her unable to walk, drive, or lift anything after he was done.
On Tuesday, Bright received a six-year prison sentence at Basildon Crown Court after admitting to attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Prosecutor Daniel Setter told the court that the incident took place on 19 May, starting at a Rayleigh music festival where Bright behaved in a threatening manner.
Witnesses at the event corroborated this account.
Worried for her safety, the woman contacted her mother for help.
Despite her concerns, Bright, who lives on Tennyson Avenue in Grays, convinced her to leave with him.
“She sensed violence might occur once they were home,” Mr Setter explained.
When they arrived, as she was on the phone describing Bright’s festival behavior as “embarrassing,” the attack began.
“He struck her with his elbow to her face, knocking her to the ground,” said Mr Setter.
“Then, he kicked her head about ten times in a melee.” Judge Samantha Cohen addressed Bright directly, stating, “Your rage appeared sudden and intense.
You kicked her head and stamped on her while she lay on the concrete patio.
You delivered nine or ten distinct kicks—a prolonged and persistent assault.” During the assault, she lost consciousness briefly.
“Miraculously, she managed to get up and sought help from a neighbor,” Judge Cohen added.
Her injuries included a broken tooth, torn ear, facial swelling, and a probable broken nose.
At first, she cooperated with police, leading to charges for multiple incidents of domestic abuse, including an assault on New Year’s Eve 2024, suffocation in February 2025, and coercive control.
She later withdrew her support for prosecution, resulting in the Crown only pursuing charges of attempted GBH, criminal damage, and cannabis possession.
Bright, who also uses the alias Nicholas Gray, pleaded guilty to all three charges.
It was revealed he has a record of 25 prior offenses, mostly domestic violence, along with assaults on police officers and breaching restraining orders meant for previous partners.
Despite her initial involvement, the victim appeared in court supporting Bright during sentencing and requested that he not be imprisoned.
She also declined a restraining order.
“The court was warned that if similar violence occurred again, her life could be at serious risk,” stated Mr Setter.
