YOUSAF CHALMERS JAILED FOR SEVERE DOMESTIC ASSAULT
A domestic abuser who failed to impress and engage with social workers has been handed a 16-month jail term.Yousaf Chalmers was hauled back to court after failing to attend a sentencing hearing.
Chalmers previously admitted forcing his former partner down a set of stairs and struck her on the face at an address in the Douglas area of Dundee.
He seized the woman’s body and pushed her, causing her severe injury, in August 2024.
A social work report to Dundee Sheriff Court highlighted “grave reservations” about placing Chalmers, of Balunie Gardens, on a community payback order.
Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith put the 39-year-old – also known as Joseph Chalmers – on a high-tariff structured deferred sentence, which would allow him to work with the department for three months.
He told Chalmers at the time: “I don’t want you leaving the court today, burying your head in the sand and think nothing will happen and you can just put it off and see what happens.” However, Chalmers failed to engage and was hauled into custody after failing to attend a sentencing hearing in February.
He appeared in the dock with a sling on his arm, claiming he and his dog had both been stabbed.
Chalmers was sentenced to 16 months in custody by Sheriff Niven-Smith.
