WILLIAM VERNON FROM CHADDESDEN AND OVERSEAL NAMED KILLER OF BABY ALANIS HOLLAND IN SHOCKING JUDGMENT

In a startling turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the local community, William Vernon, a man previously acquitted of the murder of a 19-month-old girl named Alanis Holland, has now been officially identified as her killer by a family court judge. This revelation comes more than five years after Vernon was cleared by a jury, raising questions about the initial trial and the subsequent legal proceedings.

Vernon, aged 24 and originally from Cardigan Street in Chaddesden, had walked free after being found not guilty of the murder of Alanis, who tragically died in February 2000. The jury at Leicester Crown Court had listened to evidence and ultimately acquitted him of both murder and a lesser charge of manslaughter. During the trial, Vernon had even taken the witness stand to accuse Joanne, Alanis’s mother, of inflicting the fatal injuries. Joanne, who was never charged, had left her daughter in Vernon’s care at their shared home in Overseal, Derbyshire, on the day of the incident.

However, the case took a dramatic new turn when a family court judge, Judge James Orrell, publicly declared that Vernon was responsible for Alanis’s death. The judge’s decision was motivated by concerns raised by social services, who had become worried about Vernon’s violent behavior towards children. The judge’s ruling was made “in the interests of justice,” and he explicitly stated that Vernon posed a significant danger to children.

During the hearing, Judge Orrell detailed a horrifying incident involving Vernon’s violent assault on one of his own children, a six-year-old referred to only as Child A. Vernon was found to have beaten the child ten times with a metal spatula in what the judge described as a “savage and not simple chastisement.” The judge emphasized that such brutality was “vicious” and that Vernon’s actions made it difficult to believe any child could be safe around him. This evidence was pivotal in the judge’s decision to declare Vernon a danger to children, and it served to finally vindicate Joanne, Alanis’s mother, who had been falsely accused of her daughter’s murder during the earlier trial.

Joanne expressed her relief and anguish in a heartfelt statement, saying, “I’ve been all the way to hell and back. Now, at last, everyone finally knows the whole truth. When I went to see Alanis at the mortuary I made a promise to her that I’d get justice for her.” She recounted the emotional moment when the jury returned a not guilty verdict, leading her to collapse in tears. Joanne also revealed the pain of being publicly branded a murderer, with some people calling her such in the streets. She added that, in her view, Vernon should be behind bars or at least tagged, given the severity of his actions.

Details of the court’s order remain confidential, as is customary in family law cases. Nonetheless, Judge Orrell made it clear that Vernon’s violent conduct was responsible for the fatal injuries sustained by Alanis. The judge described the injuries as “dreadful,” noting that the ruptured liver was more typically associated with severe accidents like being run over by a vehicle. The prosecution had argued that Vernon was the only person capable of causing such damage, but he was acquitted at trial. The judge’s recent ruling, however, firmly establishes Vernon as the perpetrator.

Importantly, Vernon cannot be retried for Alanis’s murder due to legal protections. New laws introduced after his initial trial, which allow for a second prosecution if new evidence emerges, do not apply in this case, as the ruling was made based on existing evidence and legal proceedings. The case remains a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the complexities of the justice system.
