RAPIST JAILED AFTER DNA TEST
Genetic fingerprinting led to William Paton, aged 30, of Dundee, being jailed for eight years at Perth High Court for a brutal rape.Paton initially denied any involvement in the crime, claiming he had not been near the victim or her home.
However, DNA tests on semen samples proved conclusively that he was the assailant, with the findings matching his DNA and the chance of a false match being one in 73 million.
Paton admitted to forcing his way into a 30-year-old nurse's flat in Dundee, overpowering, undressing her, hitting her, and repeatedly raping her.
The court heard that the victim was introduced to Paton in a public house, made polite conversation, and then was confronted at her home after her electricity was cut off due to financial difficulties.
She was pushed into a bedroom, covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, and assaulted.
Despite her distress and bruises, Paton warned her not to tell anyone.
After police traced him two days later, Paton denied involvement, but DNA evidence led to his conviction.
The judge sentenced him to eight years in prison.
