WILLIAM OWENS SHOCKS IRVINE WITH VIOLENT ASSAULT JUST ONE DAY AFTER BREAKUP
William Owens, a 36-year-old man from Irvine, was formally sentenced at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court after admitting to a brutal assault on his former partner. The incident took place on May 30 of this year, just a day after their relationship had ended, and occurred at the woman’s residence in the Girdle Toll area of Irvine.According to court records, Owens initially visited the woman’s home around 8 a.m. with the apparent intention of collecting some of his belongings. Witnesses noted that he appeared somewhat intoxicated during this early visit, but he left the premises peacefully without incident. However, later that same day, at approximately 2 p.m., Owens returned to the house and gained entry through the back door. This second visit was marked by a confrontation that escalated into violence.
Upon entering, Owens confronted the woman in her living room. Witnesses reported that he began shouting loudly, his speech slurred, indicating possible intoxication. The situation quickly turned aggressive as Owens grabbed her by the neck, pulled her hair, and dragged her to the ground. The assault intensified as he repeatedly punched and kicked her head and face, resulting in heavy bleeding from her nose. The woman, in a desperate attempt to escape, called out for help. Fortunately, a neighbor nearby heard her cries and responded by calling emergency services.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, and the woman was transported to hospital. She sustained bruising and swelling but did not suffer any fractures. The police arrested Owens on August 20, and he was subsequently remanded in custody while awaiting trial.
During the sentencing hearing, Owens’s solicitor expressed remorse on his behalf and highlighted his ongoing efforts to address issues related to alcohol consumption, which were believed to have contributed to his violent behavior. Despite these efforts, the court sentenced Owens to 15 months in prison, with the sentence being backdated to the date of his remand. The case has shocked the local community in Irvine, highlighting the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of swift legal action in such cases.
