WILLIAM MURRAY OF ST NEOTS SENTENCED FOR ABUSE OF 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of St Neots and the wider Cambridgeshire area, William Murray, a 59-year-old former soldier, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous acts committed against a young girl nearly four decades ago.

According to court records, the abuse took place in the 1980s when Murray was 31 years old. The victim, who was only 13 at the time, endured a terrifying ordeal at his hands. The court heard that Murray forcibly pushed the young girl into a bedroom, shutting the door behind her to contain her. Once inside, he proceeded to ask her to wear a negligee, which he threw at her, but she refused, describing his request as “disgusting.”

The young girl recounted that she attempted to escape from the room, making her way toward the door in a desperate bid to get away. However, during this escape attempt, Murray inappropriately touched her for a period of a few minutes, causing her significant distress. The court was also informed that Murray then removed his trousers and proceeded to masturbate in front of her, explicitly stating, “this is what guys like,” while also asking her to put her hand on his penis.

It was only much later that the victim confided in authorities about the abuse. The details of the assault, which had remained hidden for years, came to light during the trial held at Cambridge Crown Court. The jury found Murray guilty of one charge of indecent assault, a verdict that reflects the severity of his actions.

During the sentencing hearing on Friday, November 3, Recorder Peter Guest emphasized the gravity of Murray’s misconduct. He described the abuse as “sustained and more than just a momentary action,” highlighting the prolonged nature of the victim’s suffering. The judge also pointed out the additional humiliation inflicted upon the girl when Murray performed a sex act in front of her, further emphasizing the cruelty of his conduct.

Recorder Guest noted the significant age difference between Murray and his victim at the time of the assault, underscoring her vulnerability due to her young age. He also condemned Murray’s attempt to silence the girl, citing his warning to her not to tell anyone about what had happened, which was an attempt to prevent her from seeking help or justice.

In light of these factors, the court decided that only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate. Consequently, William Murray was sentenced to three years in prison for his crimes, a decision that aims to serve justice and protect the community from further harm.
