WILLIAM MCCARTNEY ESCAPES JAIL IN COLERAINE DESPITE SEXUAL ABUSE CASES
In a case that has shocked the community of Coleraine, William Anthony McCartney, a 66-year-old man, narrowly avoided imprisonment after admitting to serious sexual offenses. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history of abuse that spanned over three decades, involving both a young boy and his own victim's family.McCartney, residing on New Row in Coleraine, was found guilty of multiple charges of indecent assault. The first of these offenses occurred when the victim was only nine years old, marking a traumatic chapter in the young boy’s life. The court heard that McCartney had assaulted the boy at that tender age, causing lasting damage.
More recently, in 2002, McCartney committed another heinous act—this time against the 16-year-old son of a man he had previously abused. The revelation of this second offense came to light when the victim’s father, who had endured years of silent suffering, came forward to disclose the torment he had kept bottled up for many years. His courage to speak out shed light on the full extent of McCartney’s predatory behavior.
During the hearing at Antrim Crown Court, the judge, Mr. Justice David Smyth, expressed understanding and sympathy for the victims. Despite the gravity of the charges, the court decided against sending McCartney to prison. Instead, he was handed a suspended sentence of 18 months. The judge emphasized that McCartney’s poor health—he suffers from cancer, depression, and has a history of alcohol abuse—played a significant role in the decision.
McCartney had previously admitted to five counts of indecent assault, acknowledging his guilt in the case. However, due to his health issues, the court opted for a sentence that would not result in immediate incarceration, highlighting the complex balance between justice and compassion in this case. The community of Coleraine remains deeply affected by the revelations, and questions about justice and protection continue to resonate in the aftermath of the court’s decision.
