WILLIAM LONG SENTENCED IN CORNWALL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE
William Long, now aged 22, was just 17 when he developed a friendship with a woman via social media, during which she supported him through his mental health struggles.
One night at her home in Cornwall, as she was nearing sleep, Long was discovered on top of her, attempting to undress her.
He then proceeded to commit rape despite her pleas for him to stop.
The victim was able to escape and promptly contacted the police.
Long was subsequently arrested and charged with rape and sexual assault.
In December of the previous year, a jury found him guilty.
The court heard that Long had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was hospitalized under the Mental Health Act for two years until he was considered fit to stand trial.
The victim described the lasting effects of the assault, saying she now suffers from panic attacks, anxiety, flashbacks, and difficulties forming new relationships.
Long’s defense counsel requested a juvenile sentence, citing his mental health issues and difficult upbringing.
However, the judge commented on Long's lack of remorse and maturity, ultimately sentencing him to three years in prison.
Additionally, Long will be subject to a lifetime registration on the sex offenders’ register.
