In a case that has shocked the local community of Harefield, William Gostelow, a 40-year-old night porter employed at Harefield Hospital, was sentenced for possessing a disturbing collection of child abuse images. Despite the severity of the material found on his computer, Gostelow was spared immediate imprisonment after a judge acknowledged his display of remorse during the court proceedings.

In March, police executed a search warrant at Gostelow’s residence on Woodfield Terrace, Harefield. The raid uncovered a collection of 19 illicit films, some of which depicted acts of child rape and bondage, classified among the most depraved images on the scale used by authorities. The police described the stash as ‘sickening,’ highlighting the disturbing nature of the content. During questioning, Gostelow told officers, “I don’t know if I need help over this,” indicating a possible awareness of his problematic behavior but not necessarily seeking assistance.

Further investigation revealed that Gostelow had conducted online searches for terms such as ‘most sexually explicit films of children,’ ‘banned films of child sex,’ and ‘notorious child sex films,’ suggesting premeditation and intent to access or view such material. The images found were predominantly classified as level four, the second most severe category of depravity, underscoring the gravity of the offenses.

During the sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court on December 4, Judge Anthony Pitts described Gostelow as ‘a hard-working family man,’ expressing disappointment that someone with his public profile could be involved in such activities. The judge remarked on the difficulty of reconciling Gostelow’s role as a hospital worker and his private conduct, stating, “It is hard to believe someone of your public character could have developed such an interest.”

Judge Pitts also acknowledged the emotional toll that this revelation must have had on Gostelow’s family, particularly his mother and wife, who would have been devastated to learn that the man they loved was addicted to viewing such horrific material. Despite the seriousness of the charges, the judge emphasized that Gostelow had demonstrated remorse and a willingness to seek help, which influenced his decision to avoid immediate custody.

Gostelow pleaded guilty to seven counts of making indecent images of children. The court sentenced him to nine months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offenses within that period. Throughout the proceedings, Gostelow showed no visible emotion, while members of his family in the public gallery were visibly upset and wept.

As part of his rehabilitation and monitoring, Gostelow will be under supervision for a year, required to participate in various rehabilitation programs, and subject to a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order. This order restricts his internet access and contact with children under the age of 16. Additionally, he has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a decade, ensuring ongoing oversight of his activities and compliance with legal restrictions.
