WILLIAM BALDOCK SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN PRISON FOR HISTORIC CHILD ABUSE IN CROWBOROUGH AND LEWES
In a case that has spanned decades and shocked the local communities of Crowborough and Lewes, William Baldock, aged 69, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years for a series of historic child abuse offences.The sentencing took place yesterday at Lewes Crown Court, following Baldock's conviction on 21 charges related to the abuse of four young victims, which occurred between 1959 and 1979.
William Baldock, who resides on Mill Road in Lewes, was found guilty of multiple heinous acts, including indecent assault and gross indecency, committed against three boys and one girl.
The victims, whose ages ranged from nine to 13 at the time of the abuse, displayed remarkable courage in coming forward to testify against him, despite the many years that had passed since the incidents.
The investigation into Baldock’s crimes was led by Detective Constable Sean Stapley, who expressed his admiration for the victims’ bravery.
He stated, “The courage and bravery of the victims and witnesses has been overwhelming and I thank them all for coming forward.
For them to come to court with dignity after all these years has been amazing.
We would not have achieved this outcome without them.” According to court proceedings, Baldock targeted vulnerable children in the Crowborough area, employing manipulative tactics such as offering sweets, money, and lifts in his white van to lure young victims.
His predatory behavior persisted over many years until he was finally identified and apprehended.
The case took a significant turn when one of the victims, who was shocked to recognize Baldock as the man who had abused him four decades earlier, came forward.
This recognition led to further investigation and ultimately to Baldock’s arrest and subsequent trial.
During the court proceedings, Baldock admitted to four counts of gross indecency and one count of indecent assault.
However, a jury found him guilty of an additional 16 offences, including buggery, ten incidents of indecent assault, and five incidents of indecency with a child.
The verdict underscored the severity and extent of his criminal actions.
DC Stapley emphasized the importance of thorough investigation, stating, “The successful conclusion of this case highlights that we will investigate matters fully, regardless of how long ago the offences occurred.” The case serves as a stark reminder that justice can be pursued and achieved, even after many years have elapsed since the crimes were committed.
