VICTIM BRAVELY REVEALS IDENTITY TO EXPOSE CHILD RAPIST
Sex abuse victim Jessie Donovan bravely chose to reveal her identity yesterday to expose her stepfather, Wilfred Smedley, who has caused her immense suffering.She shared that she suffered horrific abuse between the ages of nine and 13.
Although British law generally protects the identities of sex abuse victims, Jessie unhesitatingly waived her right to anonymity to ensure her stepfather's wrongdoing is known.
She stated, "The only reason I have done this is because I want everyone to know that he is an evil man and that he has been found guilty." Smedley, aged 63 and of no fixed address, has admitted to charges of rape, attempted rape, and eight counts of indecent assault involving young people, and is currently awaiting sentencing after appearing before Newcastle Crown Court.
He could face life imprisonment for his crimes.
Jessie recounted her own struggles, including a suicide attempt at age 14 after Smedley's attempt to rape her, and she continues to deal with the emotional scars, struggling to lead a normal life.
She notes she and her husband, Michael, are divorcing because she cannot have a typical sexual relationship.
Jessie explained that she believed she was to blame for the abuse and was threatened that her mother would be homeless if she told anyone.
Her suspicions about Smedley's continued abuse after emigrating to The Gambia were confirmed when a visiting relative noticed suspicious behavior and a Gambian victim corroborated her concerns.
Detective Constable Sharon Flannery of Durham Police led a five-year effort to extradite Smedley to Britain, with help from Gambian authorities.
She expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "We have worked a long time for this result and I am absolutely delighted.
We will be applying for other charges to remain on file."
