LEEDS MAN JAILED FOR SENDING HARASSING LETTER TO WOMAN IN PRISON
A MAN has been jailed for sending a letter to a woman while he was in prison.
Wayne Thomas, 42, now of Beckhill Avenue in Leeds but formerly of Cleckheaton, was sentenced to 18 weeks behind bars at Leeds Magistrates' Court last Thursday.
He admitted an offence of harassment - breach of a restraining order on conviction at an earlier hearing.
Thomas sent a letter from HMP Lincoln on January 13 this year to a woman who he was banned from contacting by a restraining order that was imposed by Leeds Crown Court back on February 20, 2023, according to court records.
The 42-year-old's guilty plea was taken into account when sentencing.
But court records said the offence is so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified "because the defendant has a flagrant disregard for court orders, previous record and character, domestic nature of offences, history of breaching court orders." Thomas was also ordered to pay £239 in total, which included £85 in costs and a surcharge of £154 to fund victim services.
